Examples of resources

Adult Literacies Online www.aloscotland.co.uk
Engaged support from practitioners across Scotland to contribute resources, set up a content review team, wrote the script for the web pages, designed learning material, collated resources from practitioners, came up with the url name for the site, recommended the design and structure for the website and search engines and promoted the use of the resource bank at national conferences and training workshops across Scotland.

Created an interactive CD ROM to Introduce Playwork
Back to work programmes and government childcare funding incentives has increased the number of childcare places in Scotland and at the same time, legislation requires existing staff who are experienced but unqualified or new entrants to the profession, to be qualified to SVQ2 in playwork. There are currently not enough suitably qualified tutors available to deliver the training and hence SkillsActive (Playwork Skills Council) commissioned Sheerface Learning to research and develop appropriate learning material which could demonstrate learners have developed the required skill, knowledge and understanding. The resources were created on CD and contain a programme of study with word searches, crosswords, quizzes, animated games, worksheets, assessments, dairies and video clips.

Online Employment Rights and Responsibilities Module ( NVQ 2)
Commissioned by Cheynes Training we have developed an online learning module for Employment Rights and Responsibilities, this learning programme is a mandatory unit designed for people who are studying for an Apprenticeship in Hairdressing. Students need to demonstrate they have developed the required skills, knowledge and understanding by working through a range of online activities, quizzes, video and text files.

Additional examples include:

Literacies Awareness for the Financial Sector
Developed training material and delivered a literacies awareness programme for staff working in banks, credit unions and money advice centres across Scotland. Ran ‘train the trainer’ sessions for life skills and literacies tutors. This work was funded by the Scottish Government and included designing, adapting and producing learning resources as appropriate, delivering pilot training sessions, obtaining evaluations, producing an evaluative report, collating and presenting this report.

Using ICT in Adult Literacies Learning
Designed and then delivered units within the ‘Using ICT in adult literacies learning programme’ to key practitioners across Scotland who took responsibility to cascade the training to other practitioners in their region. The training was designed to broaden practitioner’s awareness and use of ICT in literacies and to provide ‘hands on’ technical training. We created training material including practitioner’s worksheets and lesson plans. (Learning Connections)

Developed educational resources
Sheerface was commissioned by Open Door Fife & Cornerstone in Partnership with Fife Council to conduct desk research and then design and cascade educational resources for skills for life teachers and support tutors in Fife Schools and Colleges to raise awareness of homelessness and associated issues within the educational environment and build capacity to prevent homelessness.

Exemplification for Self Awareness Unit
Commissioned by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, Sheerface Learning created material to give additional guidance to practitioners working within Community Learning and Development on how to help students to complete the Self Assessment Unit. This Unit is designed to allow candidates to increase their knowledge of self. They will do this by undertaking a project which will enable them to find out more about their own qualities and feelings and learn through experience and by evaluating their skills, ability and progress.
